The Electric Press, Leeds

Hailing from the small market town of Thirsk, Leeds was the backdrop to a large chunk of my misspent (?) youth. One of my favourite buildings in the city has always been The Electric Press at 38 Cookridge Street.

It’s now Grade II Listed but originally housed a printing works called Chorley and Pickersgill around the turn of the 20th century.

Alongside the print works, the building once housed West Riding Carriageworks and cabinet manufacturers Roodhouse & Sons.

Currently, the building is home to the Carriage Theatre, a Revolution and a Be At One… I’m not entirely sure all of this is progress in the strictest sense of the word. But when it comes to old buildings like these, it’s always encouraging to see them still in use. It makes it more likely they’ll be preserved for future generations to enjoy.

The full Historic England record for this building can be found here.
